Here's How to Protect Your Commercial Building From a Flood

When flooding is projected in your area, it’s important to have a plan to protect your facility. Here are some steps to go through when there’s a possibility of flooding in your area. Check here for a full checklist you can print out and have with you for when flooding is likely.

1. Identify Flood Risk - The first step in preparing for a flood is to identify the flood risk in your area. There may be low places where water accumulates, or you may just have basements, ground-level entrances and areas near bodies of water that you need to protect.
2. Protect Critical Infrastructure - Critical infrastructure such as electrical systems, HVAC systems, and other essential equipment should be elevated or moved to a higher level to prevent damage from flooding. You should also unplug and move any large, loose electrical items.
3. Clear Gutters and Drains - Clogged gutters and drains can cause excess water to accumulate on the roof and around the building, leading to flooding and water damage. If you’re able to, clear these gutters and drains before the storm comes to help mitigate any preventable flooding.
4. Install Flood Barriers - Flood barriers such as sandbags or inflatable barriers can be installed around the building to prevent water from entering.
5. Have an Emergency Plan - The emergency plan should include procedures for evacuating the building, communication with employees and tenants, and steps to take after the flood has passed.
