American Airlines opened its premiere, 300-acre, five-building Robert L. Crandall corporate headquarters in April 2019, named for its retired chairman and CEO. The modern commercial campus informally known as “Skyview” is effectively its own city, featuring restaurants, office space, a museum, a fitness center, pools, a training facility and more.
TDIndustries has provided full-time facilities management for the American Airlines corporate headquarters since 2012. This year’s opening of the state-of-the-art, 600-room Skyview 6 hotel is the newest addition to the airline’s flight-themed home to this 130,000-plus employee airline.
The American Airlines campus is a nonstop hub of action. The company’s training is conducted on-site, including flight training and flight attendant school, and there’s a lot of traffic to and from the hotel and office buildings.
Because of that 24/7 schedule, TD’s team is always on the clock working on the maintenance and management of the HVAC, plumbing, electrical and central utility plant systems for all the buildings on campus, as well as all the janitorial work. TD’s efficient work to keep operations flowing smoothly is vital for the fast-paced style required to serve American Airlines.
With its full-time staff, TD can reduce downtime at any of American Airlines’ buildings, which is especially important for American’s terminal command center on campus, where all the airline’s 6,700 flights per day are directed.
The state-of-the-art campus optimizes efficiency with automated systems for the lights and window shades, HVAC, and even the commercial laundry system in the hotel. These systems are impressive and high-tech but most useful when working at peak performance. For these machines to continue running smoothly, they must be maintained and managed by TD’s highly qualified facilities managers and technicians.
Keeping equipment and systems functional and beautiful at this jewel of a corporate campus is a top priority for the TD team. While COVID-related supply-chain issues have made replacing broken items more challenging, the team still finds ways deliver for its partners.
The relationship between American Airlines and TDIndustries goes back 11 years. Kenny Durrett, TD’s senior facilities manager on-site at the American Airlines campus, worked for American previously in his career, which brings another level of trust and understanding. Because of the strong relationships, American Airlines asks TD employees to sit in on meetings regarding maintenance and service needs and values their feedback in those meetings.
With TD’s fully on-site and committed team, American Airlines doesn’t have to worry about emergency response. Recently, a power surge caused a transformer to blow up late on a Friday night. Durrett and his colleagues drove right over to the campus and stayed until 2 a.m. to make sure no systems went offline and American could continue its operations with no interruptions. The team, working together with American Airlines and Oncor, was able to stabilize the system that night with generators and partial restoration of power. And a quick turnaround that brought full power back over the weekend meant that weekday office employees had no idea that anything went wrong over the weekend.
As this longtime relationship continues, TD is committed to providing the best facilities maintenance possible. With its industry-leading expertise and relationship-building, TD is confident that American Airlines’ campus is in the best hands for years to come.
